Los Javis is a family-owned, artisanal mezcal brand rooted in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, with a distilling tradition dating back to 1979. Founded by Javier Mateo and his wife in 2003, the brand is now operated by three generations of the Mateo family, all named Javier. Their mezcal is crafted from 100% Espadín agave, which is roasted in conical stone ovens, crushed using a tahona, naturally fermented in wooden vats, and double-distilled in copper pot stills. The Reposado expression is aged for six months in used American oak bourbon barrels, imparting a golden hue and a smooth, balanced character. Tasting notes include a full-bodied aromatic blend of chamomile, caramel, and grass on the nose, with rich hints of caramelized butter, marzipan, and banana bread on the palate, culminating in a long, smooth finish.
